Ridge capping repairs in Warragul
Cracked pointing or loose ridge caps on a Warragul tile roof? Learn the difference between repointing and rebedding, what it costs and what to send.
Ridge capping repairs fix the curved caps that run along the ridges and hips of a tile roof. If only the outer layer of pointing has cracked, a roofer can usually repoint over sound bedding; if the caps rock or the mortar underneath has crumbled, they need to be lifted and rebedded first. A provider decides which after looking at the caps up close, because the two jobs look the same from the ground.

How is ridge capping put together on a tile roof?
Each ridge and hip on a tiled roof is covered by a row of curved capping tiles. The caps sit on a bed of mortar laid over the cut edges of the roof tiles, and the joints and edges are then finished with a thinner coat called pointing, which seals the bed from the weather and holds the caps in line.
Over the years the pointing cracks with sun, frost and small movements of the roof frame. Water then gets into the bedding, the bedding softens and breaks up, and the caps start to work loose. On a house with several hips, there can be a lot of capping to look after: a simple gable roof has one ridge, while a hipped roof has a ridge plus four or more hips.
What are the signs that ridge caps need work?
You can spot most of the warning signs without leaving the ground:
- Hairline or open cracks in the pointing along the ridge, often easiest to see with a phone camera zoomed in.
- Gaps between the caps and the tiles below, or a cap that sits higher or crooked compared with its neighbours.
- Caps that rock or click in wind, or a cap that has slid down the hip.
- Crumbs of old mortar or sandy grit collecting in the gutters below a hip.
- Moss or lichen growing thickly along the ridge line.
- A ceiling stain or damp patch that lines up with a hip or the main ridge.
A stain under a hip is not always the capping. The same patch can come from a cracked tile, a blocked valley or a lifted flashing nearby, so the source still needs confirming. Our guide to tracing a roof leak covers how that is done.
Repointing or rebedding: which does the roof need?
| Option | What is done | When it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Repointing only | Loose pointing is cleaned off and a new layer of pointing is applied over the existing bed | Bedding is still firm and caps do not move; the cracks are in the top coat only |
| Rebedding and repointing | Caps are lifted, old bedding is removed, a new bed is laid, caps are set back in line, then pointed | Caps rock or have slipped, bedding crumbles when touched, or water has got under the caps |
| Replacing broken caps | Cracked or missing caps are swapped for matching ones, then bedded and pointed | A branch, foot traffic or storm has broken a few caps |
| Part of a full restoration | Capping work is done along with tile repairs, cleaning and coating | The whole roof is worn, not only the ridges; see tile roof restoration |
Repointing over bedding that has already failed is the most common shortcut. It looks tidy for a season, then the new pointing cracks because there is nothing solid under it. A provider who has lifted a sample cap and found the bed sound can justify repointing alone; one who has not been on the roof cannot.
What does a careful roofer check before quoting?
A good quote for ridge work comes from someone who has looked closely at the caps. Expect the provider to:
- lift or tap a few caps along each ridge and hip to judge whether the bedding is sound
- count the hips and measure the run of capping so the price reflects the actual length
- check the tiles either side of the ridge for cracks, because they are often damaged when people walk the ridge line
- look at nearby valleys and flashings, since those are plumbing items and may need a different trade
- tell you which pointing product they use, its colour, and how it will be cured before rain
- explain how they will get on and off the roof safely and what edge protection is planned
A provider should not seal over cracked pointing with paint or a roof coating and call it repointed, and should not leave lifted caps loose on the roof overnight if rain is forecast.
How is the work done, step by step?
- Set up safe access, including edge protection or harness points where the roof is steep or two storeys.
- Clean moss and loose material from the ridges and hips.
- For a repoint, rake out loose pointing; for a rebed, lift the caps and stack them safely, then chip out all the old bedding.
- Lay new bedding and press each cap back into a straight line, with even overlaps.
- Apply pointing along both edges of the caps and into the joints, tooled to shed water.
- Replace any cracked tiles found along the ridge, clean up mortar dust and clear the gutters below.
What do ridge capping repairs cost?
For a whole roof’s worth of ridges and hips, rebedding plus repointing comes in at $840 to $3,675 in the What’s The Damage guide (October 2026 update, GST included). Replacing broken or cracked tiles is a separate line in the same guide at $315 to $1,050. These figures come from a Melbourne roofing cost guide, so a Warragul quote may be higher or lower. The price moves with the length of capping, the pitch, the number of storeys, whether the job is a repoint or a full rebed, and how many cracked tiles turn up. The roofing cost guide for Warragul compares this with the other common jobs.

Which rules apply to ridge capping work?
The Building and Plumbing Commission says roofing stormwater work, the plumbing class for roofs, excludes roof coverings made of non-metallic tiles, concrete, slate and similar materials. Its roofing stormwater class page sets this out. Rebedding and repointing caps on a tile roof is therefore roof tiling, not plumbing, and is usually done by a roof tiler or roofer. If the same job includes replacing a valley iron or a flashing, that part is plumbing and needs a plumber licensed in the class.
The Australian Standard for installing roof tiles is AS 2050; ask the provider whether their method follows it and the tile maker’s instructions. Ridge work also puts people on the highest, narrowest part of the roof. The WorkSafe Victoria code on falls in home building deals with controlling that risk, and a provider who plans to stand on a steep ridge without any fall protection is cutting a corner you will not want to share.
Why do exposed ridges near Yarragon wear faster?
Ridges take the full force of wind and weather. A house on a rise or on open farmland catches more wind than one tucked into a sheltered street, and loose caps on an exposed site are more likely to be lifted in a storm. Around Yarragon, the Strzelecki hills rise above 500 metres just to the south, and homes on those slopes and on the open ground toward the Moe River flats have little shelter. If your house sits somewhere exposed, cracked pointing is worth fixing before winter rather than after the next big blow.
Moss is the other local factor. Shaded ridges that stay damp for long periods grow moss in the joints, which holds water against the pointing and speeds up cracking. Cleaning it off is part of a proper capping job.
Through this site, your enquiry goes to an independent local roofer, and that business inspects the ridges, prices the job and does the work under its own arrangements with you. The about page explains the referral in full.
Next step: send photos of your ridges and hips
To get a useful reply, send your ridge capping details and include:
- zoomed photos of each ridge and hip, taken from the ground or an upstairs window
- how many hips the roof has, and whether it is a gable or hipped roof
- the tile type, for example concrete or terracotta, if you know it
- the number of storeys and how steep the roof looks
- any leaks or stains inside that line up with a ridge or hip
- your suburb
Frequently asked questions
- How often does ridge capping need repointing?
There is no fixed timetable. It depends on the original work, the pointing product, how exposed the roof is and how much the frame moves. Check the ridges from the ground every year or two and after big storms, and act once cracks or loose caps appear.
- Can I repoint ridge caps on a single-storey roof myself?
It is work at height on a sloping, often slippery surface, and walking a tiled roof can crack tiles. If you are not trained and equipped for roof work, it is safer to have a roofer do it with proper fall protection and access.
- Does a metal roof have ridge capping that needs pointing?
No. A metal roof uses a folded metal ridge cap fixed over the sheets, sometimes with foam or sealing strips underneath. It has no mortar bedding or pointing. Loose or rusted metal capping is a roof plumbing repair, handled with the rest of a metal roof.
- Will new pointing match the colour of my old caps?
Pointing compounds come in a range of colours. Ask the provider to show the colour options before work starts, and expect the new pointing to look brighter than the old roof until it weathers.
- Is ridge capping work covered by a plumbing compliance certificate?
Rebedding and repointing tile caps is tile work, which sits outside the plumbing roofing class, so it does not attract a plumbing compliance certificate on its own. If the job also includes flashings or valley irons, that part is plumbing and the licensed plumber deals with the certificate.
